Stubborn Urine Spots

Urine Spots are difficult to deal with because….

·          Animals often urinate when nobody’s looking and many spots go unnoticed.

·          More than 1/4 cup of urine will penetrate into the carpet’s backing and padding. Once the urine dries it forms a dehydrated reservoir that’s just waiting for moisture and humidity.

·          Once the summer months arrive with humidity and heat, the urine solids in your carpet are “activated” and off-gas bacteria and ammonia which contribute to a foul-smelling condition.

·          Urine spots are sometimes hard to detect. A moisture probe and black lights are tools that a professional uses to locate the spots.

·          In order to effectively remove urine from any carpet all contaminated areas must be discovered and treated.

Why It’s So Hard To Get Out!

Urine forms a waxy “crust” on the surface of your carpet. Because of a high concentration of salts, bacteria, and other organic matter, urine forms a wax-like greasy residue that resist ordinary cleaning solutions. Professionals use a moderately strong acidic solution to break down the urine solids before they attempt to remove the spot from your carper.

Mild urine spots can be cleaned from the surface BUT… Heavier deposits affect the backing and padding of your carpet. You can either remove the padding and clean the carpet from the back, then re-install it or we can offer you another option…

Sub-surface Extraction

We utilize special cleaners and a powerful vacuum system that removes pet urine, stains, and odors from the padding, carpet backing and the face fibers in one step.  Extreme contamination may require several visits because of a situation call “wicking”.

What About “Wicking”?

What is Wicking? Just like the old fashioned oil lamps that draw oil from a reservoir and stay damp. Urine spills create a reservoir that dries out. Once they are re-wet from cleaning, the carpet pile acts like a “wick” and hydraulic pressure pushes the moisture to the surface of the carpet. Until the urine is removed entirely from the reservoir, spots will continue to return to the surface and the pungent smell will continue to be troublesome.

Cleaning urine spots from the surface of your carpet is an “art” that even qualified technicians find a challenge at times, so be patient if several visits are necessary to remedy urine stains.

How To Do It...

Don’t Worry!

You have two options for trying to get rid of pet stains and smells.

·            Do it yourself. Products like “Nature’s Miracle” or Lloyd’s work pretty well for surface stains. Be sure you saturate the area well enough to contact the urine source. You can also use vinegar and water to remove urine spots. Mix 50-50 white vinegar and water then pour 1 cup per 3” spot on to the carpet. Let solution set for 20 minutes on carpet. Cut a diaper in half and place it on the carpet absorbent side down. Put a heavy weight (like a brick) on the diaper and wait 12 hours. If there’s color transfer do it again. Keep repeating the process until you eliminate the urine reservoir under the carpet!

Clean Sweep’s Top 5 Questions And Answers About Pet Stains And Odors.

Q: My dog went on the carpet and I cleaned it myself  and there seems to be no stains or odors. How can I be sure that all the urine is out?

A: The only way to be sure that all the urine is out is to be sure that the amount of cleaner was equal to or greater than the amount of urine deposited and that the cleaner was removed completely either by blotting and rinsing or with hot water extraction cleaning. How can you tell if it’s all out? The only way to know after the fact is to use professional urine detection equipment (we will test your carpet for free!)

Q: If I don’t do anything about the urine deposits is it harmful, is there a health concern to my family?

A: Urine deposits left untreated will over time cause the release of harmful bacteria and other germs that are unhealthy for your family to breath and touch. Especially young children are subjected to urine contamination because they often play and eat on the floor.

Q: My wife and I have been discussing the possibility of putting our dog to sleep because of the urine problem in our home. Is there another option?

A: Check with your veterinarian to see if the animal has any health problems. If necessary we can put you on a regular program on a frequent basis at low cost on an ongoing basis until the animal is able to stop messing the carpet.

Q: How much does Professional Pet Stain & Odor Removal cost?

A: It depends on the severity of the deposits, how many spots and what was used to clean the spots before we were called. Call our office to set up a free carpet audit.

Q: I’ve tried everything I know to get rid of the smell. What next?

A: Our professional cleaning system deals with even the worst urine stains and odors with a high degree of effectiveness. Consumer remedies for pet stains are effective only to a limited extent. If you don’t have the time or patience to spend hours dealing with animal stains, call Clean Sweep Carpet & Fabric Care for FREE advice and encouragement. You probably don’t  need to replace the carpet or put your animal to sleep.
